Racing the Wind was written for a multi-level string orchestra, combining elementary, middle and high school musicians to create one amazing full sound! The piece was inspired by watching the horses race at the Kentucky Derby and imagining the feeling of running as fast as possible. Even you haven't been to a horse race, you probably still know the feeling of riding your bike downhill, or racing your scooter or skateboard, and feeling the wind in your face.

The joyful melody depicts that free feeling and is passed around to each section, so each grade level has an interesting and important part to play. There is a slow middle section to give students a chance to work on expressive and lyrical playing. The exuberant melody returns with a flourish, giving the advanced players extra fun moments to add to the uplifting joyful spirit. This piece is a great opportunity to have all levels of your school district's orchestras work together for an unforgettable performance!
