City Awakens, City Sleeps
Composer David Bobrowitz
Having taught in the New York City area for most of his career, much of David Bobrowitz's writing is indelibly marked by his experiences in the great city.
The composer opens this work with a quiet principal theme depicting a city that is in overnight slumber. Little by little the piece begins to pick up energy as the city becomes alive with activity. Now a catchy rhythmic melody holds sway as the daylight hours unfold. As the day begins to wind down Bobrowitz returns to the initial theme and ever so gently the city begins to fall back into a state of rest.
The slow - fast - slow format works very effectively, and this is a perfect piece for the middle of a concert or festival program.
